Latest UK Education 2026 Rules for International Students

The UK remains a top-tier destination for global talent, but the 2026 UK Student Visa Requirements have introduced several high-stakes changes. From the full transition to eVisas to the updated Graduate Route Duration, here is everything you need to know.

1. The Full Transition to digital eVisas (Effective Feb 2025/2026)

As of February 25, 2026, the UK has officially retired all physical immigration documents. Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs).

All new students receive a digital eVisa linked to their passport. You must create a UKVI Online Account to access your status. When traveling, your "Permission to Travel" is checked digitally by airlines before you even board.

2. Increased Financial Maintenance Requirements

To ensure students can manage the rising cost of living, the Home Office has implemented a significant increase in the "Proof of Funds" required for a Student Visa.

  • Inside London: You must now show £1,529 per month (for up to 9 months).

  • Outside London: You must show £1,171 per month (for up to 9 months).

  • The 28-Day Rule: These funds must still be held in your account for a consecutive 248-day period ending no more than 31 days before your application date.

3. The 2027 "Graduate Route" (PSW) Reduction

This is the most critical update for those planning to continue stay in UK after Study for Work.

The Graduate Visa (Post-Study Work) is changing:

  • The Current Rule: Students applying on or before December 31, 2026, are still eligible for the 2-year stay (3 years for PhDs).

  • The New Rule: Any application made on or after January 1, 2027, will be granted only 18 months of permission.

  • Strategy: If you are a January 2026 intake student, ensure you complete your course and apply for your Graduate visa before the year-end deadline to secure the full 24 months.

4. New Visa Application Fees (April 2026 Update)

The Home Office has scheduled a moderate fee increase effective April 8, 2026.

Standard Student Visa (Entry Clearance): Increasing to £558.

Expert Advice for 2026 Applicants

  1. Check your e-Passport: Ensure your Digital Account is linked to your latest passport. If you renew your passport, you must update your UKVI account before traveling, or you may be denied boarding.

  2. Keep your Finances Updated: Make sure your Bank Statement is updated in accordance with the recent policies.

  3. Give Authentic Response in Credibility Interview: Illustrate your Guinness by ensuring to deliver authentic responses in credibility interview. Be prepared to explain exactly why you chose your specific course, how it fits your career and why you want to pursue the course in the UK
